Check Engine Code

P0014

"B" Camshaft Position — Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)

Severity: medium DIY difficulty: 2/5 Typical cost: $0–$500

What P0014 means

P0014 is the exhaust-cam twin of P0011. The ECM has detected that the Bank 1 exhaust camshaft is advanced beyond the commanded position, typically during a VVT actuation event.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle
  • Loss of low-end torque
  • Reduced fuel economy

Likely causes (most common first)

  1. Dirty or low engine oil
  2. Failed exhaust VVT oil control solenoid
  3. Clogged oil passage to the exhaust cam phaser
  4. Worn camshaft phaser
  5. Timing chain stretch (common on GM 2.4L, Ford 3.5L Ecoboost, and some VAG engines)

Can I keep driving?

Drivable, but a stretched timing chain is a ticking clock. Change oil + filter first, re-scan. If the code comes back, plan for a shop visit.

Typical repair cost

DIY fixes can start near $0 (parts only). Shop repairs for P0014 typically run up to $500 depending on the underlying cause and vehicle. Start with the most common cause — Dirty or low engine oil — before throwing parts at it.
