Emergency & Safety
The short answer
The AAA 76-Piece Severe Weather Road Assistance Kit is the best all-around emergency roadside kit for most drivers, combining jumper cables, first aid supplies, and cold-weather essentials in one bag. For minimalists, the Lifeline AAA 42-piece kit is a solid lighter option.
A good roadside emergency kit is cheap insurance against a bad day. Whether it's a flat tire on the shoulder, a dead battery in a parking lot, or a winter breakdown, having jumper cables, a flashlight, warning triangles, and basic first aid within arm's reach can keep a frustrating situation from becoming dangerous.

AAA 76-Piece Severe Weather Road Assistance Kit
A comprehensive kit with jumper cables, first aid supplies, and cold-weather gear, all organized in a durable carry bag.
A lighter, more compact AAA-branded kit covering the essentials without overloading your trunk.
A larger budget-friendly kit that bundles jumper cables, a tow strap, tire pressure gauge, and a fuller first aid assortment.
A family-oriented kit with thorough first aid contents alongside core roadside tools like cables, a triangle, and a flashlight.
At minimum: jumper cables (or a portable jump starter), a reflective warning triangle or flares, a flashlight with fresh batteries, a basic first aid kit, gloves, a tire pressure gauge, and a phone charging cable. In cold climates, add a blanket, hand warmers, and an ice scraper.
Yes — a jump starter handles dead batteries, but a roadside kit covers first aid, visibility (triangles/vests), minor repairs, and cold-weather emergencies that a jump pack can't address. The two complement each other.
Store it in the trunk or rear cargo area where it's easy to reach but out of the passenger cabin. Avoid leaving sensitive items like adhesive bandages or batteries in extreme heat for long periods, and check the kit twice a year.
Inspect your kit at least twice a year — typically at daylight saving time changes. Replace expired first aid supplies, test flashlight batteries, and confirm jumper cables and triangles are still in good condition.
Pre-made kits are convenient and cost-effective for covering the basics. Building your own makes sense if you have specific needs (long road trips, off-roading, infants, pets) — many drivers buy a pre-made kit and then customize it with extras.
