Oil Leak Under the Car — Common Locations
Oil leaves a dark brown/black puddle. Top sources: valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and on turbo cars the turbo oil seals.
What's happening
Engine oil is dark brown to black and feels slick (vs coolant's slightly slippery sweet feel). Where the puddle sits relative to the engine narrows it down. Front of engine = front main / timing cover seal. Top of valve cover wet = valve cover gasket (very common). Bottom oil-pan-area wet = pan gasket or drain plug. Back of engine wet, drips behind the bellhousing = rear main seal (expensive).
You might also notice
- Burning oil smell when warm
- Smoke from the engine bay (oil dripping on hot exhaust)
- Oil consumption between changes
- Visible wetness on engine sides
Likely causes (most common first)
- Valve cover gasket (most common, especially past 80k miles)
- Oil pan gasket
- Crankshaft front or rear main seal
- Cam plug or distributor O-ring (older engines)
- Failed PCV system causing pressurized crankcase (blows oil through any seal)
- Turbo oil drain or oil feed seal
- Loose oil filter or drain plug after a recent service
What to check first
- Park on cardboard overnight to localize the drip
- Clean the engine, then run it 20 minutes and re-inspect — fresh oil shows the source
- Pull the dipstick: confirm oil level and check for milky contamination (coolant intrusion)
Common OBD2 codes for this symptom
Don't have the code yet? Look up your code or read it with AXLY.pro.
Can I keep driving?
Drivable as long as you keep oil topped up and watch the level weekly. Don't ignore — leaks usually grow.
Confirm with the actual code
Symptom-based diagnosis narrows the field — reading the actual stored code finishes the job. AXLY.pro is a free iPhone app that pairs with any Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and reads every stored DTC.
