Phantom Misfire

What mechanics already call a P0300 that will not show up on the lift: random misfire, no cylinder named, gone by the time you look. A stranger sees a ghost; anyone who has chased an intermittent sees their own month.

A phantom misfire is the fault that sets code P0300, random or multiple cylinder misfire, then disappears the moment the car is on the lift. The scan tool says it happened. The engine runs clean in the bay. Common causes include a coil that breaks down only when hot, a small vacuum leak, or fuel delivery that sags under load.

The shirt keeps P0300 on the front because the code is what a car person’s eye lands on first, and leaves the rest as a ghost story for everyone else.

Best for: mechanics, anyone who has chased an intermittent misfire, and Halloween parties where nobody else gets the joke.

It’s Not Haunted. It’s a Bad Ground.

The wipers come on when you brake, the radio resets when you signal, the dash dims when the window goes down. It is never a ghost. It is almost always a corroded ground strap.

Electrical gremlins feel supernatural because unrelated things start affecting each other. That is exactly what a bad ground does: when a ground strap or connection corrodes, current looks for another way back to the battery and finds it through circuits that were never meant to carry it.

The design sets the claim large and the answer small, because the deflation is the joke: IT’S NOT HAUNTED. IT’S A BAD GROUND. The person wearing it is the one who finds the fault, not the one spooked by it.

Best for: anyone with an older car, the friend who owns a multimeter, and anyone who has ever cleaned a ground and watched the ghosts leave.

Halloween gifts by budget

Ghost stories every mechanic has lived

Cars have always had a slightly haunted vocabulary. A misfire that sets a code and then refuses to happen in the bay is a phantom. Lights that flicker in sympathy with the turn signals are a ghost in the wiring. Both are real faults with boring answers, a weak coil or a corroded ground, and that is the joke: the person wearing the shirt is the one who finds it.

Halloween gift ideas for car people

For the mechanic: Phantom Misfire on a hoodie, for the one who has spent a week chasing a code that will not repeat.

For the owner of an older car: It’s Not Haunted, It’s a Bad Ground, on a tee. Every one of them has a story about wipers that came on by themselves.

Under $25: stickers at $12 and mugs from $18 for toolboxes, desks and the coffee you drink while staring at a wiring diagram.

If your own check engine light is the scary part this Halloween, AXLY reads the code on your iPhone and tells you what it means. Here is how it works.

Halloween drop questions

When do I need to order to get it by Halloween?

Order by October 17 for delivery in the US before Halloween. Every piece is printed when you order, which takes 2 to 5 business days, and US shipping takes another 3 to 5.

What is a phantom misfire?

It is shop slang for a random misfire, usually code P0300, that sets intermittently and will not reproduce when a mechanic goes looking for it. Common causes are a weak coil, a vacuum leak or a fuel delivery problem that only shows up under certain loads or temperatures.

Why do car electrics act haunted?

Almost always a bad ground. When a ground strap or connection corrodes, current finds another path home, so unrelated circuits start affecting each other: lights dim when the window moves, wipers twitch when you brake. Cleaning or replacing the ground usually ends it.

What is a good Halloween gift for a car guy?

Something that reads as a ghost story to everyone else and a diagnosis to them. Phantom Misfire and It’s Not Haunted come on tees, crewnecks and hoodies, plus mugs and stickers from $12.

How do I find a bad ground on my car?

Look for symptoms that cross circuits: lights that dim with another accessory, gauges that move when you signal. Check the main ground straps from battery to body and engine to chassis for corrosion and loose bolts, and measure voltage drop across a ground with a multimeter while the circuit is working. More than a few tenths of a volt across a ground points to the fault.

Does a P0300 code mean my engine is damaged?

Not necessarily, but do not ignore it. A random misfire can come from ignition, fuel or air problems, and a misfire that continues can overheat the catalytic converter. If the check engine light is flashing, the misfire is active right now and you should drive as little as possible.

Will these work after Halloween?

Yes. Neither shirt is about pumpkins. Both are real diagnostic jokes, so they wear year-round.

Is shipping free?

Yes. Shipping is free on every order to the US.

What is AXLY?

AXLY is an iPhone app that reads your car’s check engine codes through a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and explains them in plain English, with an AI mechanic you can ask follow-up questions. The shop is merch for the people who use it.
